Hussain, 12, was never sent to school. His parents are rag pickers. Even as they have never insisted that he work at their trade to contribute to the family’s income, it never occurred to them to send him to school.
His neighbour, Israel, comes to the Hope school. During a casual chat in the evening, Israel recommended school, and compared time spent with his teacher favorably to roaming the streets.
One day in January Hussain walked in with Israel. In April, 4 months later he can read Hindi, has finished phonics in English and can add, subtract, multiply and divide three-digit numbers. He is ready for Class 4.
